How Greek-style god names are usually built

Greek gods have names that were once plain words. A name usually joins a root that says what the god governs to an ending that marks a person: -os or -eus for a male god, -ia or -ora for a female one, and -ion or -ates for a lineage. Because the root was an everyday word, the name sounded like a description before it sounded like a person, and that is what gives it weight.

An epithet then does most of the story work. It is a short, vivid phrase joined by a hyphen, the Far-Shining, the Bright-Handed, and it lets the same god be loved in one town and feared in the next.

Building a pantheon that feels Greek

Give every god a domain, an epithet for each town that worships them and a family tie to at least one other god. Greek gods are relatives, and their quarrels are domestic. Keep the endings regular: pick a few and use them, so readers sense a language behind the names. Vary the epithets by region, so a sailor and a farmer address the same god differently. Do not borrow the real names, even as nicknames, because they bring the whole myth along with them. Keep a family tree and a table with each god's root, ending, epithet, symbol and festival, and check that each god has one clear domain, so that a reader can remember who answers which prayer.

Questions about Greek god names

How do I make a name that sounds Greek?

Join a root that says what the god governs to an ending that marks a person, such as -os, -eus, -ia or -ora, then add a hyphenated epithet. The result sounds like an old description turned into a name.

Are these the real Greek god names?

No. These are invented deities in a Greek style, and the real pantheon names are filtered out. That keeps your myth separate from the existing stories.

How many gods does a Greek-style pantheon need?

Start with the four domains of sky, sea, earth and night, then add one or two for fire, love, war or the hearth. A small family with real quarrels works better than a long list.

Are these Greek god names free to use?

Yes. They are built from word tables and free for stories, games and tabletop worlds. Search your final choice before you publish, because a short name can match an existing character.
