How demon names are usually built
Demon names rely on friction. Hard stops, hissing z and x, and closing consonants that stop the tongue make a name feel like it should not be said lightly. Lesser demons are short and often comic, with small names such as Snikwick that match their size. Greater ones grow heavier: three syllables, a hard edge in the middle and a title that lists what they have devoured.
An apostrophe works as a pause in a name from another tongue. Use it for one family of fiends and not for every demon, so it still reads as a mark of origin.
Giving hell a hierarchy
Decide how rank shows in the name. Imps get short and rough names, fiends get a middle length and lords get long names with titles. Keep one sound for each infernal court, so a reader can tell which lord owns which servant by the first syllable. Decide the rules of true names too: if a name binds a demon, the story should explain who knows it, who has written it down and who has crossed it out. A demon who uses a false name creates a fine twist, so keep a note of each demon's real name, the false one and who has been fooled.

Questions about demon names
How do I name a demon that feels threatening?
Use hard stops and hissing sounds, and give it a title that lists what it has done. A name that is awkward to say aloud makes a character feel dangerous.
Should demon names have apostrophes?
Use them sparingly. One court or family of fiends with an apostrophe reads as a mark of origin, and a whole hell full of them reads as filler.
Are these demon names free to use?
Yes. They come from sound tables and are free for stories and games. Search a final choice before publishing in case it echoes an existing character.
