How orc names are usually built

Orc names lean on stops and growls: k, g, z and th, short vowels, and a closing consonant that lands like a fist. One or two syllables is the norm, and a third only when the speaker wants to sound old or important. The sound does most of the characterisation, so a name that is easy to bark across a battlefield beats one that is clever on the page.

Many orcs also carry an epithet earned in a fight or a famous failure: Gashak Skullsplitter, Murug the Quiet. The epithet tells the reader what the warband remembers about them, and it can change when they do something worth a new name.

Making orcs feel like a people

Decide what the orcs value and let the names say it. A clan that prizes strength can use blunt nouns for its epithets, while one that prizes cunning can lean on odd or ironic ones. Keep the base names inside one set of sounds so clans read as relatives rather than strangers, and give a rival clan a slightly different palette. Avoid apostrophes unless you want a separate culture, and keep a short list of which epithets are earned and which are inherited, so a scarred veteran never shares a title with a newborn.

Questions about orc names

How do I name an orc that is not a cliche?

Pick one sound the clan loves and one it avoids, then add an epithet from something that happened to this person. A specific story behind the name makes it feel earned instead of stock.

Should every orc have an epithet?

No. Let most carry a plain name and give epithets only to those who did something worth remembering. A rare title carries more weight in a scene.

Can I use these orc names in my game or book?

Yes. They are built from sound tables and are free to use. Search any final choice before you publish, since a generated name can match an existing character by chance.
