Musael is a writing app made by Lucernel LLC, a company registered in Wyoming, USA (30 N Gould St, Ste R, Sheridan, WY 82801). Lucernel is responsible for the personal data described here. For anything about your data, write to support@musael.com.

This policy covers musael.com, the workspace at app.musael.com, the desktop app and the public reading pages under musael.com/read.

The short version

  • Your stories are yours. We store them to sync and share them as you ask, and for nothing else.
  • We never sell personal data and never use your writing to train AI models.
  • By default we count visits anonymously, without cookies. You can switch that off in Privacy choices or in Settings.
  • Emails about offers and news are optional and off until you choose them. You can stop them any time in Settings.
  • Payments go through Link, Stripe's checkout service, which sells the subscription to you. We never see your card number.
  • You can export everything and delete your account from Settings at any time.

What we collect

Your account

Your email address, the name you choose, a hash of your password (never the password itself) and, if you use them, the ids Google, Apple or GitHub send when you sign in with them. With two-step verification on, we also keep the encrypted secret of your authenticator app and hashes of your backup codes.

What you write

Manuscripts, scenes, plans, world entries, notes, sketches and attachments of the projects you keep in your account, so they sync across your devices and reach the people you share them with. A project you keep only on a device stays on that device.

What you publish

Stories you publish, your public profile, comments, reviews and likes. These are public on purpose: anyone can read them.

Payments

Link and Stripe handle your payment details. We receive your plan, the status of your subscription, the country used for tax and the amounts, never your card number.

Usage data

On each device you choose one of three settings, in Settings → Usage data or in Privacy choices at the bottom of the site:

  • Anonymous counts, the default: pages and features are counted without cookies and without anything stored in your browser. PostHog tells the day's visitors apart with a hash of network address and browser, computed on its server and not kept. IP addresses are discarded.
  • Help more: the same counts linked to your account id (never your email or name), plus recordings of the workspace with every text, field and image hidden.
  • Nothing: nothing is sent.

A browser that sends Global Privacy Control starts on Nothing.

With Anonymous counts or Help more, our server also notes a few milestones of your account under its id, never your email, name or writing: the account created, how you sign in, a confirmed email, your plan and trial, your first project online, an AI task done, credits bought, an app connected, an invitation sent or accepted, a story published, where you found Musael, and whether you turned the email choices on or off (never your address). With Nothing, none of these are sent.

Where you found Musael

The workspace asks once how you found Musael. If you answer, we keep the answer with your account, with the line you add if you write one, such as what you asked an assistant. Our administrators see it as totals and the latest lines. The answer also goes to PostHog with your usage data as chosen above: with Anonymous counts only the place you picked, with Help more also your line, and nothing with Nothing. If you skip or close the question, we keep only that you skipped it.

Emails about offers and news

When you create an account, and again in Settings, we ask whether you want emails from Musael. There are two separate choices, both optional and both off until you turn them on: Offers and bonuses (discounts, free credits and early access) and News (new features and writing tips). You can say yes to one, both or neither; Musael works the same either way.

If you answer, we keep for each choice whether it is on or off, when you chose, where you were (the sign-up form, the first screen of the workspace or Settings) and the wording you saw, so we can show what you agreed to. Our administrators see this when they handle a request about your data. We send these emails only to an address you have confirmed. When delivery is enabled, every marketing email will have an unsubscribe link, and you can switch each choice off at any time in Settings → Emails from Musael. When you delete your account, your choices and their history are deleted with it. Account emails, such as confirmation links, password resets, invitations, receipts and security notices, are service messages and do not depend on these marketing choices. We currently store your choices; marketing delivery is not yet enabled.

Security and operations

The devices where you are signed in, sign-in and security events, a log of the emails we send you (recipient, type and result, never the text) and, to limit fake sign-ups, a keyed hash of the network address an account was created from.

How we use it

  • To run Musael: sign-in, sync, sharing, public pages, exports and support.
  • To bill your plan and keep track of your AI credits.
  • To keep the service safe: stopping spam, fraud and abuse, and moderating public content.
  • To learn which features help, from the usage data you allow.
  • To send you the emails about offers and news that you asked for.
  • To meet legal obligations, such as tax records.

If you are in the EU or the UK, our legal bases are the contract with you (your account and plan), our legitimate interests (security, abuse prevention and anonymous counts), your consent (Help more, and the emails about offers and news, which you can withdraw at any time) and our legal obligations.

AI features

AI runs only when you start an AI task on Ink or Press, and only the text that task needs is sent. Quill never sends anything to an AI model. The details are in the AI Policy.

ChatGPT, Claude and other connected apps

You can connect Musael to an AI assistant such as ChatGPT or Claude, or to another app that supports MCP. When you connect one, you choose what it may do (Read and add, or Read only) and whether it reaches all your projects or only one.

  • What Musael receives. The requests the assistant makes to Musael, such as the idea for a new project or the chapter it wants to check. Musael does not receive the rest of your conversation with the assistant.
  • What the assistant receives. Only what each request returns: for example the Plan of a project or its World entries and, on Press, the scenes it asks to read. The assistant's provider (OpenAI for ChatGPT, Anthropic for Claude) handles that content under its own privacy policy and your settings there.
  • What we keep. The connection itself: the app, the access you gave it, when it was created and last used, and a fingerprint of its token. What the assistant adds to your projects is saved like any other change you make.
  • Stopping it. Revoke the connection in Settings, under Connected apps. The app stops working at once.

Moderation of public content

Public comments, reviews and published stories are checked automatically for spam and for content no site may host, using models from TypeSafe; cases the check is unsure about go to a person. Private projects are never checked. The rules are in the Terms.

When data leaves the EU, we rely on the EU Standard Contractual Clauses or the EU–US Data Privacy Framework, as each provider offers.

How long we keep it

  • Your account and projects: as long as the account exists.
  • When you delete your account, it leaves the live database at once. If you wrote in other people's projects, those contributions stay under the name "Deleted account", without your email or name.
  • Backups: 30 days on the server and 90 days in our encrypted backup copy, so deleted data is gone from every copy within 90 days.
  • Your email choices and their history: as long as the account exists, and deleted with it.
  • The log of emails sent: 90 days.
  • Payment and tax records: as long as tax law requires. Link and Stripe keep their own records under their policies.

Your rights

You can see and export your data (Settings → Your data gives a file with your account, and each project exports as a .musael archive), correct it, delete your account (Settings → Delete account), object to or restrict some processing, and withdraw consent (for emails, in Settings → Emails from Musael or with the link in each email). For anything the settings don't cover, write to support@musael.com; we answer within 30 days.

In the EU or the UK you can also complain to your data protection authority. If you live in California or another US state with a privacy law, you have similar rights. We don't sell personal information or share it for advertising.

Cookies and browser storage

Musael uses no advertising or tracking cookies. The workspace keeps your sign-in token and your preferences in your browser's storage, and sets a short-lived signed cookie only while you sign in with Google, Apple or GitHub or confirm a two-step code. Projects you keep on a device live in that browser or in the desktop app. The anonymous counts use no cookies at all.

Children

Musael is not meant for children under 16, and we don't knowingly collect their data. If you think a child has an account, write to us and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will tell you by email or in the app before the change applies. The date at the top shows the last update.
