How giant names are usually built

Giant names are built to be heard at a distance. They use slow, heavy syllables with open vowels and hard stops such as b, g, d and k, so a name like Gromdun or Hildagerd seems to arrive a moment after the person. Feminine names often end open, in a, ga or hild. Masculine names close on a hard syllable such as dun, mund or grim.

The by-name says what kind of giant is speaking. Stone giants take theirs from rock and body, as in Granitefist. Frost giants take them from ice and wind, storm giants from sky and thunder, and hill giants from heath and sheep. A short phrase such as the Patient sits well after any of them.

Keeping giant names consistent

Decide how giants talk about names. A race that lives for centuries does not need many of them, so a giant known by one or two syllables is probably very old. Let each kind keep its own source for by-names, and never mix ice words into a stone giant. Give your giants one habit that smaller people notice, such as naming a child after the weather on the day, and keep it across the story. Small folk will shorten the names, and a giant who allows it is making a point about patience.

Questions about giant names

How do I make a name sound giant-sized?

Use slow, heavy syllables with open vowels and hard stops such as b, g, d and k. Two or three syllables work best, and the by-name should be a plain compound word of two ordinary words.

What is the difference between stone, frost, storm and hill giant names?

The given names share a sound. The by-names differ: stone giants use rock and body words, frost giants use ice and cold, storm giants use sky and thunder, and hill giants use heath, sheep and old mounds.

Should a giant have a long name or a short one?

Short names suit old giants who speak little. Longer names with a by-name suit a giant who needs to be introduced to smaller folk. Mix both in your story to show age and status.

Can I use these giant names in a game or novel?

Yes. They are free to use in any tabletop campaign, novel or game. The generator keeps out names of giants from known myths and books.
