How angel names are usually built

Many angel names end in -el or -iel, a sound taken from old languages where it stands for God or for a bright power. That ending is why the names feel instantly celestial. The first half is a short, open syllable, and the whole name usually lands on three syllables: Kadiel, Sarael, Zephiriah. A title or office follows, and the office matters: it tells readers whether this being carries news, stands over a cradle or leads a charge.

Callings shape the sound. Messengers take light, quick names, guardians take warm ones with long vowels, and warriors take names with one hard consonant in the middle that gives the name some bite.

Keeping a heavenly host consistent

Decide how angels are ranked and how a reader can tell. A rank word such as Seraph or Warden before the name gives the order of the host without a chart. Decide whether angels keep one name for ever, receive a new one with each task or are known only by an office. Keep the ending -el to one family of beings, so that readers know that a being with a different ending belongs to another tradition. Avoid the famous names, because readers will think of the original and not of your character. Keep a sheet with each angel's name, rank, calling and the people they have visited, so that your guardians do not guard the same house twice.

Questions about angel names

Why do so many angel names end in -el?

The ending comes from old languages where it means God or divine. It gives names a celestial sound at once, which is why famous angels share it and why you should use it for one family of beings only.

How do I name a guardian angel?

Give it a soft, warm name of three syllables and an office that says what it watches, such as Warden of Thresholds or Keeper of the Sleeping. The office does as much work as the name.

Can I use names of real angels?

You can, but readers will think of the original. These names are invented and the famous ones are filtered out, which lets your angel be yours.

Are these angel names free to use?

Yes. They are built from sound tables and free for stories and games. Search your final choice before you publish, since a short angelic name may match an existing character.
