How dragonborn names are usually built
A dragonborn name is built to be spoken by a throat that can breathe fire, so it leans on hard stops such as k, d and t, rolled r sounds and long vowels that let the breath carry. Feminine names often end open and low, in a, ia or ith. Masculine names tend to close on a hard stop, in ar, ax or oth.
Most storytellers add a second name. A clan name says who stands behind you and is usually longer than the given name. An honour name is shorter and is earned: Ashscale, Stormcrest or Cindertail tell the listener what the bearer did or survived.
Keeping dragonborn names consistent
Decide whether the clan comes first or last and keep to it across the whole cast. Give each clan a sound of its own, for example a clan whose names all open with Thes or Kar, so a reader can tell cousins from strangers. Write down which honour names a clan hands out and for what, since a dragonborn who changes the name mid-story will have a reason, and that reason is a scene. Do not mix clan and honour names on one person without saying which one they use at home.

Where dragonborn names come from in a story
Dragonborn are a people made of two ideas, the dragon and the household. The dragon explains the sound of the names. The household explains the second name. If your world has no gods of its own to hang them on, let the clan carry the weight: a clan can be a trade, a fortress or an old oath.
A good test for a name is to say it with a mouthful of bread. Names that survive that test, such as Torvax or Sorrith, are easy for a table of players to repeat. Names with five consonants in a row are better kept for villains and ancient clans.
Using the names at the table
For a player character, pick the given name first and ask what the clan makes of them. A dragonborn who left a proud clan is a very different person from one who carries its name gladly, and the generator gives you both the name and the question.
For a game master, keep a short list of three clans with a one-line reputation each. When a stranger gives their name, the table learns something at once, and you spend your time on the scene.
Questions about dragonborn names
What makes a dragonborn name sound draconic?
Hard stops such as k, d and t, rolled r sounds, and long vowels. Feminine names often end in a, ia or ith, and masculine names often end in ar, ax or oth, but nothing stops you from mixing them.
Do dragonborn have a family name?
Most fiction gives them a clan name. It can come last, as in Torvax of Clan Dravakar, or first, as in Dravakar Torvax. Pick one order for your setting and stay with it.
What is an honour name?
It is a second name earned by a deed, a scar or a trait, such as Ashscale or Stormcrest. It is shorter than a clan name and can change over a life.
Can I use these dragonborn names in a tabletop game?
Yes. The names are free to use in any campaign or story, including Dungeons & Dragons. Check a final choice against your table's other characters so two players do not share a sound.
