How dark elf names are usually built
Dark elf names keep the flow of an old elven language and sharpen the edges. The vowels stay long and liquid, but the consonants shift towards z, x, v and the doubled ss, so a name such as Xalvyn or Zirathil sounds as if it would cut you if said carelessly. Feminine names often end in a or ss, masculine names often close on a hard r or x.
A noble house gives its members a second name made from the sigil, such as Nightweaver or Silkblade. An exile loses the house and keeps the given name, then collects an epithet from where they ended up: Zirathil the Unbowed, or Xalvyn of the Broken Lantern.
Keeping dark elf names consistent
Decide what the house is: a family, a guild, a cult or a court. Give each house one sigil and one sound, so that cousins share a rhythm in their given names, and keep the sigil in the house name. If dark elves in your world are matriarchal, let the ranks show in the names. Higher status can mean more syllables, a house title or a formal prefix. Exiles should lose that detail first, which makes a stripped name a quiet way to show someone has fallen. Avoid copying names from games that already own the culture: invent your own sigils and house names, and let the language stay yours.

Writing dark elves who are not cartoon villains
The name is only the first signal. A dark elf who is polite, careful and a little tired is far more convincing than one who sneers. Pick a name with some warmth in it, such as Ilyssa or Valen, and let the house name carry the menace.
If you want a hero, give them an exile name. An outcast who has lost a house but kept their manners sounds like someone with a reason to be kind.
Houses, sigils and rivalry
A good house has a sigil, a trade and a rival. The sigil gives the name, the trade gives the money and the rival gives you scenes. Spider and silk suggest weavers and spies. Obsidian and dagger suggest soldiers and smiths. Dusk and veil suggest priests.
Keep three or four houses at most in a story. Readers can follow a few families by their sigils, and the names will do the work of a map, so a stranger's second name tells them where to stand.
Questions about dark elf names
What makes a dark elf name sound dark?
Long liquid vowels, sharpened by consonants such as z, x, v and doubled ss. The name should stay speakable and flowing, just edged. Soft endings with a hard centre read as elegant and dangerous.
How do dark elf houses work in fiction?
A house is a family and a power. It has a sigil, a trade and a rival, and its members carry a second name taken from the sigil. Keep the number of houses small so readers can follow them.
Do I have to use the word drow?
No. Dark elf is a plain description, and you can invent your own word for the people if you like. The generator avoids names from published settings.
Can I use these dark elf names in a game or novel?
Yes. They are free to use in any tabletop campaign, novel or game. Check a final choice against your own cast so two characters do not share a sound.
