Words you use most
Words of four letters or more that you use at least twice are listed here, most used first.
A word is a run of letters or digits, and a hyphenated word counts once. Chinese, Japanese and other languages written without spaces are split with your browser's word dictionary. Reading time uses 238 words a minute, speaking time 150 words a minute, and a manuscript page is 250 words.

How the word count works
The counter splits your text into words the way a word processor does: a run of letters or digits is one word, and a hyphenated word such as well-known counts once. Numbers count as words, so 1,000 is one word. For Chinese, Japanese and other languages written without spaces, the browser's own word dictionary finds where each word ends.
Characters are the characters you see. An accented letter or an emoji is one character, and line breaks are not counted. The count without spaces leaves out spaces and tabs. A sentence ends at a full stop, a question mark, an exclamation mark or an ellipsis, or at the end of a line, and every line with text in it is a paragraph.
What to do with the numbers
Reading time uses 238 words a minute, the average silent reading speed for English non-fiction, and speaking time uses 150 words a minute. A manuscript page is 250 words, the way agents and publishers count double-spaced pages, so 1,000 words come to 4 pages.
The list of most used words helps you find repetition. It shows only words of four letters or more that appear at least twice, so small grammar words stay out of the way. A word that comes back every few sentences, such as looked or suddenly, is worth a second look when you revise.
Questions about Word Counter
How do I count the words in a document?
Copy the text from your word processor or editor, paste it into the box and read the count. It updates as you type or edit, and nothing is uploaded.
What is the difference between characters and characters without spaces?
The first counts every character including spaces; the second leaves out spaces and tabs. The text Hello world has 11 characters and 10 characters without spaces. Line breaks are not counted in either.
Why does my word processor show a different number?
Programs differ on hyphens, slashes, dashes and numbers, usually by a few words in a long text. This counter treats a hyphenated word as one word and a dash between two words as a break.
How long does it take to read or say my text?
At 238 words a minute, 1,000 words take about 4 minutes to read silently. Spoken at 150 words a minute, the same 1,000 words take about 7 minutes.
Is my text saved or sent anywhere?
The count happens in your browser and the text is never sent to a server. A draft is kept in this browser's local storage on your device so you can return to it, and the Clear button removes it.
