How starship names are usually built
Starship names follow the same logic as ships at sea, with a little more flavour. Navies use a prefix and a firm virtue or a threat, such as ISV Iron Resolve. Science fleets use a prefix and a curious phrase that suggests a mission, like RSV Wandering Horizon. Freighters, which are owned by people who have to make payments, use names with a sense of humour and a quiet complaint: the Honest Accountant, the Barely Delivery.
The prefix is a useful signal. It tells you which institution owns the ship and what rules the crew follows, so a name without one reads as independent.
Naming a fleet
Decide who names ships in your universe and what they want the name to do. A military often names a class after a theme, so every ship in it shares a type of word. An explorer service picks hopeful or questioning names. Independent captains name for luck, debts and old jokes. Keep a ledger of each ship's prefix, class, registry and previous names, and make renaming a minor drama. When a ship appears on a scene, show the name early, and let the crew use a short form that readers will pick up in a line.

Questions about starship names
How do I name a starship?
Decide who owns it and what they would want the name to say. Militaries choose firm words, explorers choose questions and freighter crews choose jokes.
Do starship names need a prefix like ISV?
Not necessarily. A prefix tells the reader who owns the ship, and a ship with no prefix reads as independent. Use it consistently within one navy.
Are these starship names free to use?
Yes. They come from word tables and are free to use. Search a final choice before you publish, since some phrases may match an existing franchise.
