How noble house names are built

A noble house has three names that matter. The family name (House Aldric) is the one people say. The seat is where the family lives or the lands it holds (of Greyhaven), and it often ends up used as a title. The family words are a short motto that members say at weddings and funerals, such as Hold the Line. Together they sound like a coat of arms. Some houses are named for a founder and some for a place, and the older the house, the more likely the two are the same word.

Keeping noble houses consistent

Give every house a banner, a colour and a set of words that fit its name, and let one of the three tell something about its history. A house with the words Ever Watchful holds a border. A house with Salt and Iron once held a port and a forge. Let the older houses keep short, plain names, and let newer ones take longer, grander titles. Track which families are allied or at feud, because similar names are easy to mix up in a crowded chapter. And decide whether a house name can pass through marriage or whether it ends when the last son dies.

Questions about noble house names

How do I name a noble house?

Choose a family name, then add a seat and a short motto. The family name is what people say, the seat explains where its power sits, and the motto says what the family wants to be known for.

What are family words?

Family words are a house motto, a few words that a family uses as a creed or a warning. They are usually short, old and a little grim, and they appear on banners, rings and graves.

Should a house be named for its seat or for its founder?

Either. A founder name feels personal and old. A place name feels solid and permanent. Many houses have both, and the two drift together until nobody remembers which came first.

Can I use these house names in my novel or game?

Yes. They come from word tables and are free to use. The tables avoid the names of well-known houses and mottos, but search your final choice before publishing.
