How mermaid names are usually built
Mermaid names flow. They are built from open vowels and soft consonants such as l, n, r and s, with few hard stops, so that they sound like water moving over stone. Most end in a vowel or a liquid sound: Coralynn, Nytharune, Sivarika. After the name come an epithet and a court, the way merfolk in stories take a title from the part of the sea they come from: the Pearl-Eyed Current, of the Coral Court.
The water matters. Reef names are bright and quick, ocean names low and long, river names gentle and curved, and polar names cool, with a hint of ice in the consonants. A reader should hear the temperature of the water.
Keeping merfolk consistent
Decide how the sea names a person. Many stories give merfolk a name that is half song, so humans cannot say it properly, and a short land name for visitors. Pick a rule and keep it: the human version can be a trimmed form of the real one, which is a nice detail. Give each court or colony a shared sound, so readers see where a mermaid belongs. Keep mermaids from different waters different in sound, or the world will feel like one pond. Keep a list with each mermaid's sea name, land name, court and water, and avoid beginning two names in a scene with the same letter, because many of the names share long vowels.

Questions about mermaid names
What makes a good mermaid name?
Flow. Open vowels, soft consonants like l, n, r and s, and an ending that fades instead of stopping give a name that sounds like water, and a short epithet and court add the sea around her.
How do I name a merman or mer-child?
Use the same sound families. The names here suit merfolk of any gender, and you can add a different ending, such as -on or -an, if you want a name that reads as masculine for your world.
Should merfolk from different waters sound different?
Yes. Warm reefs call for bright, quick names and deep seas for low, slow ones. The difference tells readers where a character belongs before you describe the water.
Are these mermaid names free to use?
Yes. They are built from sound tables and free for stories and games. Famous mermaids are filtered out, but search your final choice before you publish.
