How KDP works out the printing cost

KDP prints each copy when someone orders it, so you pay nothing upfront: the printing cost is taken out of your royalty. The cost is a fixed amount per book plus an amount per page: fixed cost + (pages x per-page cost). Black ink books with up to 110 pages pay one flat cost with no per-page part.

On Amazon.com a 300 page black ink paperback on white or cream paper costs 1.00 + (300 x 0.012) = 4.60 USD to print. A 55 page book on Amazon.co.uk costs a flat 1.93 GBP. Every extra 100 black ink pages add 1.20 USD on a regular trim. The same book costs a different amount on each marketplace, because the store where the reader orders sets the rate.

What changes the cost

Trim size matters through one line: a book more than 6.12 in wide or more than 9 in tall is a large trim and has a higher per-page cost. 6 x 9 in is a regular trim and 7 x 10 in is a large one. At 300 pages on Amazon.com that is 4.60 USD against 6.10 USD. Bleed settings and the cover finish do not change the cost.

Ink and paper matter more. For 300 pages on a regular trim Amazon.com charges 4.42 USD on groundwood paper, 4.60 USD for black ink on white or cream paper, 8.65 USD for standard color and 20.50 USD for premium color. Standard color needs 72 to 600 pages and is not offered on Amazon.com.au.

From printing cost to list price

The minimum list price is the printing cost divided by the royalty rate: 0.5 below the threshold and 0.6 from it. A cost of 4.60 USD gives 9.20 USD. A cost of 5.80 USD would need 11.60 USD at 50%, but the 60% rate starts at 9.99 USD on Amazon.com, so the minimum is 9.99 USD. For 300 pages on a regular trim on Amazon.com, standard color costs 8.65 USD and premium color 20.50 USD, against 4.60 USD for black ink on white or cream paper.

Does the trim size change the printing cost?

Only between regular and large. A 6 x 9 in book with 300 black ink pages costs 4.60 USD on Amazon.com and a 7 x 10 in book costs 6.10 USD, because anything wider than 6.12 in or taller than 9 in is a large trim.

No. The cost follows the marketplace where the reader orders. The same 300 page black ink book costs 4.60 USD on Amazon.com, 3.85 GBP on Amazon.co.uk and 4.35 EUR on Amazon.de.

What is the lowest list price I can set?

The printing cost divided by 0.5 or 0.6, rounded up to the cent. For the 300 page black ink book on Amazon.com that is 9.20 USD. For a large trim book at 6.10 USD it is 10.17 USD.
